Saint Nicholas saves the sailors at peril - Religious Folk art hand-painted icon of the Miracle Agios Nikolaos icons and tradition of Greece

St Nicholas rescuing the sailors at sea- A very traditional icon theme. In Greece, Saint Nicholas is the patron Saint of Sailors - Boats and ships carry the icon of ""Aghios Nikolaos" where a candle is lit before it, and prayers are been made for safe passage.  When in danger, captain and sailors make an ex voto, a "tama" to bring it to  his church "when saved". This is usually a silver or a golden ship that is hanged to his icon.

The icon was handpainted, with several layers of egg tempera, in a gessoed wooden panel that we 've prepared ourselves here in angelicon. Finally the icon was sealed with shellac and the resin varnish.

Size it measures approx 27x35 cm -It  comes packaged as a gift with some little extras from our shop
