Saint Macarius and the Cherub- Contemporary neo byzantine Abba Macarius the Great eastern orthodox holy icon sacred art of the East

Abba Macarius the Great and the Cherub- A great monastic figure of Egypt and of the eastern orthodoxy. I like the shape of this thin slice wood. Its upper part reminds me the hood of a monk- ( the kind of monk hoods that are found on the old icons of the east)- I used two slices to paint St Macarius of Egypt nased on a representation taken by a old icon found in St Catherine's Monastery.

The thin slice of a wooden branch (measuring 25 cm x 7 cm approx) was specially treated with gesso and sandpapered to acquire a surface for painting. Several layes of egg tempera where applied and finally shellac and resin varnish have sealed the colors.

Each icon comes with a glued (like a stamp) hanger assorted with its handmade felt bag, certificate and little extas- ready for a very special gift.

You can find a wonderful presentation of the original icon by Adam Baker on Prezi
