Handpainted Olive wood- Christ carrying the cross - contemporary sacred art and religious iconograhy of Greece by angelicon
An old slice of an olive wood branch uneven in height, thinly gessoed was the materila for the ooak painting of the the Lord carrying the cross - I used the natural curvature and the lines of an olive tree slice, to paint this type of "On the way to the Cavalry" theme. I also used a blade to reveal some of the uneven textured surface (that was not completely covered with gesso) , under the black eggtempera, and give a sense of the way I believe the sky should look, on His way to the Cross...
The size of this artifact can be seen in relation with my (small) hand in the last pic of its first drawing. There is also a variation in the height of the slice with its tallest point to be approx 5 cm and the lowest (the tip of the nose) to be 1cm. You also can see that in the collage with the various shots from various sides
The artifact was created with egg tempera in a slice of an olive wood branch that was specially treated before gessoed. On top of the colors shellac (goma laca) and a final layer of "varnishwas used to permanently seal the colors.
