Byzantine icon of St Theophilos - Orthodox Greek Neo-martyr Theofilos painted buy hand egg tempera on wood

An icon of St Theofilos, painted in the byzantine style with egg-tempera. The Saint is dressed in  garments of vivid red and blue with a pinch of yellow   The background  is copper gold with an antique patina on The name of the Saint (O Agios Theofilos)  is on the sides of his halo in Greek

The size of the wood is 12x18 cm. The technique we are using for the creation of this portrait is the same that were used for centuries in traditional iconography. It is named egg tempera technique. A  mixture of pigments, egg yolk and vinegar produces the color that is applied in many layers in a plastered  wooden panel. After the painting  the icon is applied gets shellac on top (an organuc varnish) and then  a natural resin varnish to last for generations.
