Byzantine icon of Saint John the Theologian, Folk Religious Art of Greece the Evangelist Ioannes of Patmos on a hand carved and painted wooden board

St. John the Theologian or otherwise known the Evangelist or of Patmos.  His icon is hand painted in the traditional way, with colors that are few and  potent. Antique patina is appled on the hand carved (with the Evangelists symbol the eagke) making the gold copperish rose  and that is what is making it more impressive. 

The Saint is represented holding the Gospel in his hands that writes: " In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God..." His name is written on left and right with red egg tempera -Aghios Ioannis o Theologos- Saint John the theologian . On this piece  leaves of copper gold were used with an organic dye applied on top of them in order to give the look of an antique copperish patina.

The icon measures in size approx  19x25 cm

Each of our icons is drawn according to the rules of the old byzantine art of hagiography or else holy iconography. In this technique we are using the traditional egg tempera.
