Packaging and protection

Items are packaged as gifts  very thoroughly and carefully  (mainly in recycled, re-purposed packaging materials) in order to make sure that they will arrive in their original condition.

Additionally icons are usually inside a hand-sewn bag assorted with some mini extras from our shop and dried herbs from our beautiful Cretan garden (whatever is available depending the season). It keeps them company for the voyage to their new home and it is a small, symbolic gift to their new owner.

Caring for your handpainted icon

Icons should be placed on spot where it will not be exposed to continuous direct sunlight with a steady  room temperature and low in humidity. Avoid touching the surface oils from your hands invisible to the eye can damage the icon. A feather duster or a pure white cloth wil be enough to clean the dust from the icon's surface.

Production Methods

Our icons are handmade and painted by hand exclusively by us. We just do not do the carpenter's work (but he is a friend). Otherwise we do our own gessoed panes, our colors, our own varnishes. All applied by us. We even do the photoshoot. In our workshop. Home-made, Family made, Hand- made.

Egg tempera technique

The process of making byzantine iconography begins with the special treatment of a wooden panel (with a mixture of plaster).
After a couple of layers of special type of glue the leaves of gold (Copper gold or genuine 22K gold - it depends) are attached and the glorious characteristic golden  background is created
Many layers of egg tempera (a mixture of egg yolk, vinegar and  mineral pigments of various colors) are added with the brush.
After several days passed the icon is finally covered with a layer of natural resin varnish for protection.
The back of the icon is also protected with a cover of a colour mixture (mostly red as the tradition dictates, but you can also encounter other colors) .
